Workout Roundup

Well, it’s Friday again and time to give my progress report to those who care to read it. It’s good because there are people out there paying attention and have been asking how it’s been going. Thanks for the support, it helps!

This week I’ve been back into the routine. I had a good run at basketball Monday night, and it felt good after having a week off. I managed my Wednesday morning 20 minute workout and followed it up with some snow shoveling this morning after a decent dump yesterday and last night.

I did my weekly weigh-in on Monday morning. After 3 weeks I am down 3 pounds, and I’m happy about that. But more importantly, I just plain feel better. I feel stronger, I feel more energetic, and I feel healthier.

This is a long-term project, but I’m happy to be seeing some progress already. I know I’m not terribly out of shape or overweight (my Wii Fit tells me I’m lightly overweight by my BMI), but my body isn’t where I am comfortable with it. After years of complaining about it, I’m glad I’ve finally taken the steps to remedy it.

But since I’ve put it off so long, it’s going to take longer than it could have.

Post-Theism and the Church

As usual the national magazine for my denomination gets me… ummm… thinking.

The latest edition contains an article about the post-theistic church. It describes churches that have been moving away from God language and music in favour of more contemporary and secular references, to the point where their members are getting uncomfortable with the God language they encounter at services at other churches. read more…

Leadership in Troubled Times

I watch the news.

I go to meetings.

I talk to people.

Here’s a paraphrase of what I hear, “We’re doomed!”

People are losing hope. Hope they have for raising children to be well educated. Hope in having jobs. Hope in paying bills. Hope in the future of our communities, our churches, and our schools. read more…

It’s All in the Attitude – Sermon, Jan. 30, 2011

“It’s All in the Attitude”
Micah, 6:8; Matthew 5:1-12

Have you ever been sitting with a group of people when someone comes into the room and just deflates the great atmosphere in the room? Maybe you’re all sitting around laughing and sharing stories when someone enters who’s in a bad mood and the energy in the room just plummets through the floor. I’m sure it’s happened to most of you at some point. There’s many things that can affect our attitude. People, situations, weather, time of day, many things impact how we feel at any point in the day.

I remember after the bubble burst in the high-tech industry there were good days and bad days. Sometimes there were even good hours and bad hours. There could be a day when we’re getting along great, having fun, getting lots of work done, but then we get the message that a meeting is being called by a manager, and our attitude would change immediately.

Beat the Belt

Here’s my weekly update in regards to my exercise regimen.

First, I have to confess that I had a bad spell already. Last week I was feeling quite under the weather. Mostly I was very weak and had a small touch of nausea. I attempted to work out under those conditions and nearly passed out. So I took a few days off to get over whatever it was I had.

By Monday night, I was feeling 100% again and ready to get out to basketball. I arrived at the school and no one was there. I guess that since school was cancelled that day (for some unknown reason) they cancelled play for that night. Disappointed, I came home.

But, the last two mornings I have successfully completed my Active 2 routines. Yesterday was a full body workout, today was upper body. It feels good to get the heart pumping and body moving again. I am still feeling some lingering effects of a rib cage injury sustained playing basketball last spring, but I’m working through it gently.

I have not weighed myself since I first started. Since weight loss is not my primary goal, I’m not focusing on it. I know that by increasing my metabolism and fitness level the weight will come off. My goal is to increase my fitness level, and that’s where I will start.

Now, it’s time for my Friday morning workout!
