Let it Reign – Sermon Nov. 21, 2010
“Let it Reign”
Luke 23:33-43
This week we learned the identity of our future Queen as our future King proposed to her sometime recently. The world seems all aflutter with the news. Where will the wedding take place? How much will it cost? What will the bride be wearing? I suspect we’re going to hear an awful lot about this ceremony over the next few months.
The world is in need of some positive news. Continually we hear about the recession. We hear of more and more countries struggling financially to the brink of bankruptcy, especially those in the European Union. read more…
Alive – Remembrance Sermon, Nov. 7, 2010
“Alive!”
Luke 20:27-38
“As long as we both shall live.”
Those are the words we hear in wedding ceremonies. The promise to love our spouses for our entire time here on earth together. It’s a beautiful moment in the ceremony when the bride and groom make their vows, their promises, to love and care for each other for all their days. It’s a promise you cannot take lightly. People tend to live a long time. If you are getting married in your 20s, and if you live the expected life span into your early 70s, then that’s a 50 year commitment maybe even longer!
We have a number of 50+ year marriages in our church here. Has it always been an easy journey? You can be honest, we know life has its ups and downs. It’s highs and lows.
Life itself is a journey. For many of us, we may be a little unclear of what happens at the end of this journey. We wonder what happens when we die? read more…
Hallowed – Sermon, Oct 31, 2010
“Hallowed”
Ephesians 1:11-23; Luke 6:20-31
I am not a lot of fun at Hallowe’en. I never have been. It’s not a religious thing for me. I’ve never been a fan. My earliest memories of Hallowe’en are not memories of enjoyment. It’s never been my thing to get dressed up and go begging for candy. Maybe that’s why I don’t wear my robe in church.
Sure Hallowe’en has Christian roots. The church attempted to lay claim to the day as it did many pagan holidays early on. But, as usual, this day has been over-commercialized like any other holiday.
Keeping Watch – Sermon, Oct 24 Fairview United Church Anniversary
“Keeping Watch”
1 Samuel 3:1-11; John 14:1-14
How many of you noticed in the stained glass behind me that Jesus is wearing purple sneakers before you were told by someone else? How many of you are noticing it for the first time right now? (note: I wish I had a photo of it? Anyone?)
We do this all the time don’t we? I’ve driven one particular road many times, and the other day I noticed a home I hadn’t seen before. It was a big home. I’m pretty sure I hadn’t noticed it there before, but I’m also pretty sure it didn’t just drop in there out of no where since the last time I was by.
Worship Wednesday on Hiatus
I love Christian music. I listen to it constantly.
Some of it is pure, “I love you Jesus” fluff. But there is also the deep, intensely theological, moving music that I really, really love.
For the last couple of months I’ve been sharing music on this blog I find, enjoy and wish to share with a wider audience. The problem is the music industry. I can’t embed a lot of the videos I want to embed into my posts because the labels have not allowed it. Some can’t even be viewed at all outside the US!! (Hello?? What’s up with that!?)
So with this level of frustration growing, making it nearly impossible to include any of the newer music being released, I have no choice but to take a break from Worship Wednesdays for the time being. There may be the odd one here and there if I find something that meets the criteria I’m looking for, but for now, this is it.
