A Vacation Situation

This week is March Break for our schools. It is also a week I took for vacation so I could spend time with the family and get away for a few days. It worked quite well for us last year. This year was different.

3 of the 4 of us have been sick this week. So for the most part we’ve been limiting our contact with others.

It has also limited my ability to workout. I missed basketball this week. I did get in a 20 minute workout Wednesday morning, which went well, that is until the room started spinning. It was wild. I was forced to lie still for the next 8 hours. I thought it might have been a stomach bug, but now I think the nausea I experienced was from the dizziness.

I suppose I may have lost a pound or two in the last couple of days due to the fact my appetite has been suppressed. Overall, on just exercise I’m only down a couple of pounds in two months. I suppose if I altered my diet a bit I’d be more.

Here’s hoping things will get back to normal next week. We’ve had a healthy winter, so I suppose it was bound to hit our home at some point. Our turn finally came about.

Here’s to spring coming this weekend!

Fall Down and Worship – Sermon, March 13, 2011

“Fall Down and Worship”
Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11

“Fall Down and Worship”
Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11

What can we say in regards to what is happening in the world this year? Protests and horrific violence happening in the Middle East, massive earthquakes and tsunamis, you have to wonder if there is a greater meaning to what we are seeing in the news.

If nothing else, we are learning about the fragility of life. Even in our own communities we’ve had a number of surprising deaths impacting our own thoughts on the meaning and value of life. read more…

What Are We Doing? – Ash Wednesday Sermon, March 9, 2011

“What Are We Doing?”
Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

Ash Wednesday has to seem as a bit of a mystery to many people in our communities, maybe even our families. Lent as a whole has taken on a whole new meaning today.

Now, people see Lent is about giving something up. Some people give up chocolate. Others might try coffee or smoking. It’s almost like it’s the new New Year’s Resolution. But thankfully, it’s only until Easter! Which, ironically, is longer than most people keep their resolutions.

What is Lent really about? What’s its purpose? What is the significance of us coming here tonight and getting ourselves dirty? What are we doing? read more…

Pedestal – Sermon, March 6, 2011

“Pedestals”
2 Peter 1:16-21; Matthew 17:1-9

A number of years ago Bev and I were spent a few days in Toronto with some friends. We explored various parts of the city, and we saw a fair bit in the 3 days we were there. One afternoon we were exploring some of the shops along the waterfront when a man came up to me. He said, “I know you. You’re one of those movie stars aren’t you?” He kept me cornered for a few minutes before he finally decided maybe I wasn’t so important and continued on his way. I don’t think he had anyone in particular in mind, but somehow I triggered a memory in his mind that reminded him of someone famous. He was probably also on the lookout because there was an international film festival coming in the next week or so. read more…

Wants – Sermon, Feb. 27, 2011

“Wants”
Matthew 6:24-34

Our children can often surprise us. It’s not uncommon while I’m working away in the office for Anna to bring me a picture she has drawn. On a couple of occasions she has brought me a picture of a circle separated into two halves. On one side she has the title “wants”, and on the other she has “needs”. Inside each half of the circle she has identified things that fit into each category, and they aren’t things you might expect a 7 year old to have. She actually has identified correctly things like food, clothes, and yes, toys and put them into the appropriate category. It turns out they had been working on this type of sorting exercise at school, and she brought the skill home to share with us. read more…
