Sermon August 10-08 – “Walking on Water”

“Walking on Water”
August 10, 2008 – Matthew 14:22-33

There is an old story that has often been re-told in especially the Eastern Orthodox part of the church. According to the tale, a devout abbot from a monastery decided to take a prolonged spiritual retreat in a small cabin located on a remote island in the middle of a large lake. He told his fellow monks that he wanted to spend his days in prayer so as to grow closer to God. For six months he remained on the island with no other person seeing him or hearing from him in all that time. But then one day, as two monks were standing near the shore soaking up some sunshine, they could see in the distance a figure moving toward them. It was the abbot, walking on water, and coming toward shore. After the abbot passed by the two monks and continued on to the monastery, one of the monks turned to the other and said, “All these months in prayer and the abbot is still as stingy as ever. After all, the ferry costs only 25 cents!” read more…

Precision baby

I’ve watched the Olympic ceremonies in small installments, although enough to see the entire show twice. What I can say about it is that it was mighty impressive. Thousands of people taking part in the ceremony that was an amazing integration of technology and history.

What really impressed me was the precision of how everything executed. Often in opening ceremonies you see people fall, or get out of step in their routines. But this year, you really had to look hard for mistakes. There were a couple very minor ones that I noticed, but I missed them the first time watching.

I guess I sort of expected a top notch show, but with that many people so well coordinated and precise, it was truly amazing.

Now all I have to say to the politicians and protestors is… you’ve had your say, now it’s time for the atheletes to shine and have the headlines.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Sermon Aug. 3, 2008 – “Wrestling with God”

“Wrestling with God”
Genesis 32:22-31

I remember when I was growing up there were always the debates on the playground. What was real and what was fake. Often the biggest battles were over the reality of a certain television sporting event. Of course I am referring to wrestling. Huge, muscle bound men pounding on one another with fists and chairs, hurling one another inside and outside of a ring. It’s quite a show. read more…
